The AEWV Process

How We Support You Through the AEWV Process

From accreditation to job checks and recruitment — we guide you through every stage of hiring migrant workers.

01

Support for AEWV Employer Accreditation

Employers wishing to engage migrant workers through the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) process need to go through an employer accreditation process. Immigration New Zealand (INZ) assesses and approves an employer's accreditation based on a range of factors, including the employer's business and finances.

The team at Immigration Matters can assist in explaining the accreditation process and outlining and preparing the information required for the employer to apply for accreditation. What the employer is legally required to do depends on the business and circumstances.

Assistance with Job Checks

After an employer has been accredited, the employer must complete a job check before recruiting a migrant worker through the AEWV. Depending on the salary and role, employers may need to undertake a recruitment process and advertise the role. Prior to the role being advertised, some employers may need to work with and gain approval from Work and Income.

Immigration Matters can help employers understand what is required in the job check process, and complete the necessary documentation. Accredited employers must perform job checks for APEC business travel card holders and for specified seasonal employees. Job checks are used to validate that the position for which the employee is being hired requires a temporary worker.

Recruiting Employees from Other Countries

Recruiting employees from other countries can be necessary when local employees do not have the skills needed to perform a job. If an employer decides to hire migrant workers, the employment and immigration laws of New Zealand must also be satisfied. We can assist in understanding the immigration steps of worker recruitment by explaining:

  • The immigration rules for employers
  • The adequacy of job ads
  • Completing job checks
  • Migrant worker rules
  • Supporting documents
  • What happens next after a job check
  • The immigration process

It is the responsibility of the employer to make a good faith effort to attract and hire qualified workers from New Zealand. This may require specific advertising, and the services of Work and Income may also be required.

Employee Eligibility

The Employee Must Also Meet the Requirements

An employer can complete the accreditation process and job check process to verify that a temporary position requires the services of a migrant worker. However, the employee must meet the requirements relating to the job, skills, and experience to be eligible to receive an AEWV work visa.

Immigration Matters can explain the immigration process and the documents required of the employer and employee. Immigration New Zealand makes the final decision regarding visa applications.
